DAVID LUONG

CINEMATIC LIGHTING/ DIGIMATTE ARTIST

David Luong is an artist and mentor in the video games and film industries. He was most recently Art Director at Parallax studios, working on a variety of projects while managing a team of artists to create concept art and key visuals for Riot Games' "A Prince's Wish" cinematic. Before that, he was a lead artist at Imagendary Studios, focusing on lighting, digital matte painting, and sky boxes using Unreal Engine 5 on Astropulse: Reincarnation. He was also a 15 year veteran at Blizzard Entertainment working on the cinematics team, doing lighting, digital matte painting, and compositing for games such as World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Diablo, StarCraft, and Hearthstone. He is a lover of pets, all things Middle Earth, photography, and being involved in the art community.

Layers Mentorship
GOALS
  • Some world building, what does this matte painting environment need to support story wise? 

  • Create initial thumbnails for layout, color and lighting for your matte painting

  • Learn basic Lumen lighting, rendering, and cinematography techniques inside UE5 

  • Create a moving digital matte painting inside of UE5

  • Optionally learn how to use compositing to augment rendered frames out of UE using Nuke

  • This moving cinematic shot would apply to in game and pre-rendered portfolio work. 

SESSIONS
  • 10 Sessions

  • 20+ hours of mentorship.

PREREQUISITE
  • Intermediate Photoshop painting skills 

  • Familiarity with Unreal Engine 5

  • Knowing how to use a 3D pachage

  • Knowing some basic compositing in AE/Nuke etc.

  • Basic photography and how light gets reacts to get proper looking exposure.

SCHEDULE
  • Meet once a week for one hour to go over weekly progress and get feedback.
